SvN Architects + Planners (SvN) and BDP Quadrangle are working collaboratively to transform Shoppers World Brampton. They plan to convert a 53-acre shopping center in Brampton, Canada into a gorgeous, new area that’s eco-friendly and harmonious with nature. Their ideas can help create a future where the gray areas all over the world become a lot more green.

Thanks to the new design, the asphalt will be lifted away and natural beauty will be restored. The plan will create a walkable, sustainable and beautiful destination that features a mix of high-density and low-density buildings.

There will be 4,500 new residential units, something the growing city of Brampton sorely needs. The plan includes 860,000 square feet of retail, commercial and community spaces.

“As designers, leading with a landscape framework ensures a consistent vision that can be maintained during the many years of the site’s redevelopment,” said Shonda Wang, the principal of SvN Architects + Planners. “It’s the common thread that will tie all the different pieces of the built environment together.”

The new plan includes natural wetlands, rivers, ponds and meadows. Also woven into the design are parks, courtyards, terraces and green roofs. There will be a new transit plaza, not to mention 7.5 acres to use as a community hub. This will expand an existing park to create a green space for a school, recreational areas and more. Integrated stormwater management will be built into the design and greenery will be added to combat the effect of urban heat islands.

“The redevelopment of Shoppers World Brampton provides an unmatched opportunity for us to transform the site into a new community that is not only resilient to climate hazards, but also greener, healthier and has a smaller environmental footprint,” Wang said.

Lead architect and prime consultant BDP Quadrangle worked with SvN to create the plan for the site. The new design is expected to be completed by 2040.
